Smiles Of Unity Short Film Screening To Decide Winner This Saturday

KUCHING, Aug 30 (Bernama) -- Members of the public can cast votes for their favourite locally-produced short films during the Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) "Smiles of Unity" short-film screening to be held at the Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak campus, here, on Saturday.

YPS board of trustees secretary Mark Noel Bonchol said today the two-hour event would showcase three entries - "Si Kuching", "Rojak" and "School Life" - shortlisted from 16 entries submitted by local aspiring filmmakers, aged 18 to 35, for its just concluded "Smiles of Unity" short-film competition.

"Members of the public, who attended the previous screenings in Sibu and Miri, had nothing but praise for the works of the aspiring young local filmmakers and now it is up to the people of Kuching to decide the winner," he said in a statement, here.

The grand prize winner of the short-film competition stands to take home RM11,000 in cash, while the second and third prize winners will receive RM7,000 and RM5,000 respectively.

Apart from the short films, two foreign short documentaries will also be shown at the upcoming screening - "Wayang", a contribution from the Indonesian embassy, which highlights the iconic shadow puppet theatre, and "Chinese Knots", courtesy of the Chinese embassy, which tells the story of ornamental knots and their symbolism in Chinese society.
