Vishwaroopam Movie To Finally Hit The Theaters In Tamil Nadu
NEW DELHI, Jan 30 (Bernama) - The wait for mega-budget movie, Vishwaroopam, could have been the most painful one for adherent fans of Kamal Hassan in Tamil Nadu as well as those in countries like Malaysia and Singapore.
The verdict is finally out; the Madras High Court lifted Tamil Nadu government's ban on the movie.
Justice K. Venkatraman gave the green light for the movie to be screened in the Southern State at 10pm (IST) on Tuesday.
"The film can be released in theatres on tomorrow (Wednesday) and the Section 144 order issued by the district collector will be kept in abeyance," Press Trust of India (PTI) reported quoting Venkatraman as saying in an interim order.
The film would be released without any cuts or edits, it said.
"I have watched the film and it has no scenes that hurt the sentiments of Muslim community," Venkataraman had said earlier.
The state government however, has indicated that it would appeal against the lifting of the ban.
The movie was due to release on Jan 25, in Tamil Nadu, but a petition was filed, which resulted in two weeks's ban at the eleventh hour following objection from members of Muslim organisation that claimed that it depicts the community in bad light.
Accordingly, the screening of the movie, which was made in three languages - Tamil, Telugu and Hindi was suspended in several other states in India, namely Kerala, parts of Hyderabad, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh Jan 25, soon after the first show.
The film resumed playing in as many as 40 theatres amidst police security in Karnataka Tuesday morning, said PTI.
It was released with the tagline included in the credits, "All Muslims are not terrorists and the characters depicted in this film are imaginary," said the report.
In Malaysia, the movie was released as scheduled on Thursday, Jan 24, but was pulled out on Friday noon onwards after a directive from the Home Ministry.
Screening of the movie in Singapore and Sri Lanka was also delayed.
The Rs95 crore (US$17.6 million) film has been written, directed and produced by Kamal Hassan.
Besides Kamal Hassan himself in the led role, other artists in the movie include Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah, Rahul Bose, Shekhar Kapur and Jaideep Ahlawat.
Its Hindi version Vishwaroop is slated to release on Feb 1.
