Producers Encouraged To Make Films For Export Market - Ahmad Shabery

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 2 (Bernama) -- Malaysian film producers are urged to make films not only for the local market but for export as well.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said films of high value and for the overseas market could be brought to the international stage and major film festivals.

"For example, the local films sold at the Cannes Film Festival in France this year were worth over RM150 million. An animation film costing RM40,000 here was sold at more than 10,000 Euro at Cannes," he said in his winding-up speech for the ministry on the Supply Bill 2014 debate in the Dewan Rakyat, Monday.

On the broadband facility in the country, Ahmad Shabery said research found that the people's need for the facility would reach 49 megabytes per second (Mbps) by 2020.

"The best model must be found to reach the target of at least half of the Malaysian households having broadband facility at 50 Mbps by 2020.

"At that time, the need for broadband facility in schools to access information and also for entertainment will reach a very high level," he said.

On paid television service provider Astro, Ahmad Shabery said it had applied to the government to use a bigger reception dish of 80 cm in diameter compared to 60 cm now.

"Using a bigger is to eliminate broadcast disturbance. This could mean cost for the consumers. If Astro is allowed to use a bigger reception dish, will the people be given the choice of changing the dish or not? This matter will be considered," he said.
